Papuan Artisans Take Center Stage at Indonesia's National Craft Anniversary in Makassar

JAYAPURA, LELEMUKU.COM – Artisans from Indonesia's easternmost province are preparing for a rare national spotlight as the Regional National Craft Council (Dekranasda) of Papua secures four exhibition stalls at the 46th anniversary of Indonesia's National Craft Council in Makassar, South Sulawesi, from 9 to 12 July 2026.

The participation offers Papuan crafts a direct pipeline to buyers, cultural institutions, and tourism operators from across the archipelago, according to Yoniman Ronting, Secretary of Dekranasda Papua.

"Those four stalls will be utilized to display various flagship craft products of Papua together with participants from regencies and cities," he said.

The delegation will go beyond product displays by including live carving demonstrations, giving national audiences direct exposure to the technical process behind traditional Papuan woodwork.

Yoniman said the artisan presence reflects a deliberate push to shift national perception of Papua from resource extraction toward cultural and creative output.

Corporate sponsorship for the contingent comes from PT Jamkrida Papua, a regional insurance firm. President Director Desty Pongsikabe said the partnership represents private-sector recognition of cultural promotion as economic development infrastructure.

"This is our form of support for regional government activities that will showcase the works of Papuan children at the national level," he said.

The Provincial Government of Papua expects the Makassar showcase to expand market access for local crafts and accelerate growth within the region's creative economy micro, small, and medium enterprises. (Evu)
